Just a quickie today.
Thanks to Vilhelm Konnander for encouraging me to keep up this blog even though I'm in San Diego. He and I first met on an OpenSource radio show about Anna Politkovskaya in October.
Here's some YouTube linkage devoted to Sokolniki Park and vicinity:
outdoor skating
panorama view of Moscow from apartment building
drunk man dancing the lezginka in park
twentysomethings piggyback riding in the park

One piece of news did not make it to Moscow newspapers and other media outlets (blogs and vlogs included!) last year: around the time Vladimir Putin™ was hosting the G8 in St. Petersburg a number of Maaskva eateries and cafes began quietly offering a new complimentary service to its regular customers.
Any guesses? Think new horizons in making the "guest" feel at home. Yep, now upon request you could receive your own name badge just like the waitstaff, with restaurant logo and everything. And as a consequence you could walk in to the cafe (with your name tag on, of course), hearing, something like "Hi [your name]! How are you doing today?
Participating restaurants and cafes included the Sbarro pizza chain on Tverskaya St., the Crêperie de Paris near Sokolniki metro, Prime sandwich chain, and, Jagannath Vegetarian cafe (Kuznetski Most).
The McDonald's at Tretyakovskaya metro was also apparently participating in this initiative, but was experiencing some challenges with follow-though.
Could this ostensibly secret initiative have been Putin's™ way of modestly demonstrating that when it comes to world-class customer service, Russia might be ahead of the game?
Here in San Diego, out of curiosity, I inquired at a Peet's Coffeeshop if they also offered this service. I heard something I never once heard in Moscow, "Oh, I'm going to have to check with my manager about this." Upon "checking with the manager" I would learn that Peet's did not offer this service and had no intention of offering it.
But why? How else to feel at home than to be addressed by name? Don't we all go to cafés wearing name tags and introduce ourselves, saying "I'm so-and-so, I'm your client this evening. I am looking forward to a great experience here tonight. How might I assist you?"?

Goodbye Anya.

Anna and I met briefly at a press forum back in 2000. I asked her if any of her articles would ever be available in English translation. She gave me a surprised look. Came out they did. I wonder if that ever made a difference. Looking back I realize that I posed the wrong question. I should have asked, “Will your articles ever be published in readily available book format in Russian in
This weekend, on the ninth day after her death, today I went to the Novaya Gazeta offices as well as to her home.
There were only some 30 people at both places. Perhaps there were more at the cemetery today.
Below are links to some of the photos taken today:

In reflecting on her death, I don’t think Putin is the problem. His actions symbolize the illness afflicting this beautiful land. As one human rights activist and friend of mine said back in 2000, “Putin is inside all of us. He is our mirror image.” Perhaps, we are not to fight him, but rather understand him, engage him…the Putin inside all of us. And that can happen only by Love not Hate. The more we Hate, the more Suffering we create. We become part of the Problem, we become Accomplices.
And we don’t have to do anything to Love. Perhaps, all that is required is to be open to Conversation, to engage with each other and do that while suspending judgement. My hope is to some day meet Putin or those close to him and just have an unhurried conversation. This would be my chance to share where I am coming from and to hear where he is coming from.
My hope is that you will inspire the younger generation to follow her example. I recall what anthropologist Margaret Mead said once, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
Since 1999, a Force has consistently been coming and taking people away. One pensioner said, “Nothing has changed.” Is that really the case?
For now, I have made a commitment to wear a name tag with her portrait on it through the winter. And I commit to thinking together with others about how I and others can Wake Up.
