Anna and I met briefly at a press forum back in 2000. I asked her if any of her articles would ever be available in English translation. She gave me a surprised look. Came out they did. I wonder if that ever made a difference. Looking back I realize that I posed the wrong question. I should have asked, “Will your articles ever be published in readily available book format in Russian in
This weekend, on the ninth day after her death, today I went to the Novaya Gazeta offices as well as to her home.
There were only some 30 people at both places. Perhaps there were more at the cemetery today.
Below are links to some of the photos taken today:
Together with many who are still alive in the Middle World, she held space for 7 years for us to wake up and see the illness that has afflicted
I imagine wherever she is Up There she will continue to hold space for us to wake up. One woman I met today calls the outskirts of
In reflecting on her death, I don’t think Putin is the problem. His actions symbolize the illness afflicting this beautiful land. As one human rights activist and friend of mine said back in 2000, “Putin is inside all of us. He is our mirror image.” Perhaps, we are not to fight him, but rather understand him, engage him…the Putin inside all of us. And that can happen only by Love not Hate. The more we Hate, the more Suffering we create. We become part of the Problem, we become Accomplices.
And we don’t have to do anything to Love. Perhaps, all that is required is to be open to Conversation, to engage with each other and do that while suspending judgement. My hope is to some day meet Putin or those close to him and just have an unhurried conversation. This would be my chance to share where I am coming from and to hear where he is coming from.
My hope is that you will inspire the younger generation to follow her example. I recall what anthropologist Margaret Mead said once, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
Since 1999, a Force has consistently been coming and taking people away. One pensioner said, “Nothing has changed.” Is that really the case?
For now, I have made a commitment to wear a name tag with her portrait on it through the winter. And I commit to thinking together with others about how I and others can Wake Up.
